Your neighbors in Union

Irvington shares a border with Union, and our office at 2165 Morris Avenue (Route 82) is about 9 minutes from the township without traffic. We have been teaching drivers on both sides of that line since 2005. For a driving school in Irvington, that local knowledge matters: we know where a new driver will meet heavy bus traffic, where the Parkway cuts through and which quieter blocks suit a first lesson. Every lesson is private and runs 1 or 2 hours in our dual-control car, on the day that works for you — weekends included.

Where we practice in Irvington

The township packs a major bus hub and a highway into its center, so your Irvington driving instructor plans each route with care:

  • Springfield Avenue — home of the Irvington Bus Terminal, one of NJ Transit's busiest bus hubs, and the transit-village district designated in 2015. Expect buses pulling in and out and plenty of pedestrians, which makes it the right place to practice patience, scanning and following distance.
  • County Route 509 — a through route for mid-speed driving, lane discipline and signaled turns.
  • Chancellor Avenue and Civic Square — local driving past the Chancellor Avenue site of the old Olympic Park amusement park (1887–1965) and around Civic Square, the township's civic center.
  • The Parkway (GSP) — it runs through the center of Irvington, with exits 143 and 144 and a short tunnel under the bus terminal's parking lot. Entering, exiting and driving through a tunnel are all covered before you try them alone.
  • I-78 — the highway clips Irvington briefly at exit 54, a manageable first taste of highway speed.

Permit, license and road test

Irvington drivers have Newark on their doorstep: licensing and road tests both happen at 228 Frelinghuysen Ave, about 7 minutes away without traffic. Elizabeth's licensing center (17 Caldwell Place) is about 11 minutes off, and Rahway's road test site, at 1140 Woodbridge Rd and East Hazelwood Ave, about 21 — Newark and Rahway are the two closest road test sites. Appointments are offered Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Expect roughly 10–15 minutes behind the wheel with the examiner as your only passenger, in your own car or ours, which can be rented for the day.

Teens should also know the rules that follow the test: drivers under 21 display red decals on both plates and may not drive between 11:01 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

Pickup across Irvington

With no train station in town, getting to a lesson shouldn't mean another bus ride. We pick up at home, at Irvington High School after classes, or at work, and drop you back afterward. If you commute through the Irvington Bus Terminal, we can start the lesson from your workplace or your front door instead.

Start your lessons

Teens can begin with the learner's permit at 16, and nervous adults are welcome in our adult driving lessons. We also teach in Union and Maplewood.
