A gentle town for a first lesson
Most of Maplewood's driving happens on roughly 226 local streets rather than on big highways, which makes the township a forgiving place to begin. If you are comparing options for a driving school in Maplewood, distance helps too: the township borders Union to the south, and our office is about 10 minutes away without traffic. A Maplewood driving instructor from our team can start a nervous 16-year-old on a quiet residential block and, over a few lessons, build up to the busier roads that lead out of town — one on one, in a dual-control car, every step of the way.
Where we practice in Maplewood
- Residential streets — steering, stopping, right-of-way at intersections and early parking practice.
- Springfield Avenue (Route 124) — the numbered route through town and a clear step up in traffic and signals.
- Valley Street, Millburn Avenue, Irvington Avenue and Wyoming Avenue (CR 577) — connectors for lane position, turns and steady flow.
- South Orange Avenue (CR 510) — the real steering test. It winds through South Mountain Reservation in a run of bends known as the S Curves, then forms the border between Maplewood and South Orange.
- The Parkway (GSP) and I-78 — both are close by, so highway merging is a short drive away once you are ready.
From permit to road test
Maplewood teens start with the special learner permit at 16, earned through a licensed driving school with 6 hours behind the wheel. Next come 6 months of supervised practice, and for permits issued on or after February 1, 2025, drivers under 21 need 50 supervised hours, including 10 after dark. The probationary license is available from 17.
When test day arrives, Maplewood families head to Newark, where licensing and road tests share 228 Frelinghuysen Ave, roughly a 13-minute drive without traffic. Paperwork can also go through 17 Caldwell Place in Elizabeth, and if Newark is booked up, the Rahway road test site (1140 Woodbridge Rd, at East Hazelwood Ave) is around 28 minutes away. Newark or Rahway: those are the two closest road test sites. Appointments fall on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., so plan around the school timetable.
Pickup around Maplewood
Columbia High School, which serves both Maplewood and South Orange, sits in Maplewood — and yes, it is where Ultimate Frisbee was invented in 1968. We pick students up there after classes, or at home, and drop them off afterward. Commuters can meet us at Maplewood station on the Morristown Line and Gladstone Branch, beside the Olmsted Brothers-designed Memorial Park, or at work.
