NJ road test checklist — don’t get turned away
Documents, car requirements and the skills to rehearse, in one interactive list you can tick off and print.

- Free, no sign-up
- Independent guide
Use it the week before your test
More road tests are lost at the check-in desk than on the road: a missing document, a car that does not pass the safety check or decals that are not on the plates. Tick off each item below — the list is saved in your browser, so you can come back to it — and print it for test day.
What the examiner tests
The road test takes about 10 to 15 minutes. According to the NJ Driver Manual, the examiner looks at driving in reverse, following other vehicles, approaching corners and intersections, parallel parking, posture and seat belt use, starting, steering, stopping at signs, stopping smoothly, turning, turning around (the three-point turn), using the horn and yielding the right of way. You also back up in a straight line for about 100 feet.
- Backup cameras and parking sensors may be used.
- In a manual car you must show you can shift gears.
- Only the examiner may ride with you during the test.
- Practicing on the test course or in the parallel parking area is not allowed.
- If you do not pass, you must wait at least 14 days before the next attempt.

Questions & answers
NJ road test FAQ
Can I use a driving school car for the road test?
Yes, renting a driving school car is allowed. When you use our car, our instructor brings it with its registration, insurance card and policy papers — see our road test help.
Who has to come with me to the road test?
If you bring your own car, a licensed driver who is at least 21 and has held a New Jersey license for at least three years must accompany you. If you use a driving school car, the school’s licensed instructor accompanies you.
Do I need the 50-hour form for the road test?
If you are under 21 and your permit was issued on or after February 1, 2025, bring the signed BA-CSD certification of 50 supervised hours (10 after dark). The MVC’s own pages differ on whether it is checked at the road test or at licensing, so bring it to both.
Can my car be rejected?
Yes. Common reasons include an expired inspection sticker, a brake warning light, unsafe tires, tinted front windows, cracked glass, missing mirrors or seat belts, missing decals for drivers under 21, or a parking brake the examiner cannot reach.
Want help with the real thing?
