For Westfield parents and new drivers
If you are a Westfield parent about to hand over the keys, you already know the tricky parts. Downtown has more than 200 retail establishments, most of them north of the train station. Route 28 runs for two miles alongside the railroad that divides the North Side from the South Side. And by the station, Route 28 swaps streets at a roundabout and dives through an underpass. Anyone choosing a driving school in Westfield should ask how it handles all of this; we teach teens and adults to manage it, one-on-one in a dual-control car. We're about 6.2 miles from Westfield, around 14 minutes on clear roads.
Where we practice in Westfield
- The Route 28 roundabout near Broad Street. Here Route 28 switches from South Avenue to North Avenue through a short four-lane divided underpass beneath the Raritan Valley Line, a few hundred feet from Westfield station. Yielding on entry, choosing the right exit and holding your lane in the underpass all get practised.
- Downtown. From the Rialto Theater to the streets around the station: pedestrians, parking and slow, alert driving.
- Broad Street (CR 648), East Broad Street (CR 509) and Central Avenue (CR 613). The county roads that cross town.
- US 22 and the Parkway. Route 22 via the Lawrence Avenue, Mountain Avenue and Springfield Avenue exits, and the Parkway at nearby exits 135 and 137.
Licensing, the road test and the hours before it
Westfield's nearest licensing center is in Rahway, at 1140 Woodbridge Road and East Hazelwood Avenue, about 18 minutes (6.4 miles) without traffic, and Elizabeth's center at 17 Caldwell Place takes about the same time. The Rahway road test site shares the Woodbridge Road address, and Newark's site at 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue is about 20 minutes away. For permits issued on or after February 1, 2025, drivers under 21 need 50 supervised hours, including 10 after dark, so parents will be doing plenty of practice driving too. Once licensed, under-21 drivers may not drive from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., may not use hand-held or hands-free phones, must show red decals on both plates, and may carry only dependents plus one passenger unless a parent is in the car.
On test day
The road test takes about 10 to 15 minutes and includes parallel parking, the three-point (K) turn and backing straight for about 100 feet. Only the examiner rides along. If a retest is needed, the wait is 14 days. Families who would rather not use their own car can rent our school car for the test.
After school, after work
After classes at Westfield High School, a Westfield driving instructor can be waiting; we also pick up at home anywhere in 07090 or 07091, or at work. Coming off the train? We can start near Westfield station. From the streets around Mindowaskin Park to the neighbourhoods by Tamaques Park, all of Westfield is covered. Lessons are 1 or 2 hours and available seven days a week, which makes them easier to fit around sports and activities.
