Learning to drive in a city that isn't built on a grid

Elizabeth is New Jersey's fourth-most-populous city, and it drives like one. Its street plan radiates out from the central Midtown station in rings and spokes rather than a tidy grid, so a new driver has to read each intersection fresh: odd angles, short blocks and busy crosswalks. That is why we teach Elizabeth learners one-on-one, in a dual-control car, starting wherever they feel comfortable. If you're looking for a driving school in Elizabeth, distance isn't a problem: our office on Morris Avenue (Route 82) in Union is about 4.4 miles away, roughly 11 minutes without traffic.

Where we practice in Elizabeth

Lessons build step by step toward the roads that make the city demanding:

  • The Route 27 one-way pair. Northbound traffic uses Rahway Avenue and Cherry Street; southbound uses Westfield Avenue and Chilton Street. It is ideal practice for lane choice and reading one-way signs.
  • Broad Street and North Avenue. Stop-and-go traffic and pedestrians around Midtown.
  • Bayway Circle. US 1/9 now runs straight through the old circle at Route 439 and South Elmora Avenue, then makes a sharp turn onto the skyway over the Elizabeth River, ending at East Jersey Street.
  • US 1/9. Its intersections at East Jersey Street and East Grand Street are among the busiest and most demanding in the region, so we approach them deliberately, with scanning and space-cushion habits in place first.
  • Highway steps, when you're ready. The New Jersey Turnpike, where the speed limit drops to 55 mph entering Elizabeth, the Goethals Bridge approach on I-278, and Route 81 toward the airport, which lies partly inside the city.

A licensing center in town

Elizabeth has its own licensing center at 17 Caldwell Place. It opened in October 2021, replacing an agency that had closed at the end of 2010, and it sits about a minute's drive from the city centre. Road tests are scheduled by appointment on weekdays. The nearest road test site is in Newark at 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, about 5 miles and 9 minutes without traffic; the Rahway site at 1140 Woodbridge Road is a close alternative at about 12 minutes. If your family car isn't suitable for test day, you can rent our school car. On test day only the examiner rides along, while your instructor waits for you.

Pickup across Elizabeth

Lessons start and end at home, school or work. We pick up after classes at Elizabeth's high school academies — Elizabeth High School's Frank J. Cicarell Academy, John E. Dwyer Technology Academy, Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Academy, Admiral William F. Halsey Jr. Health and Public Safety Academy, J. Christian Bollwage Finance Academy, Alexander Hamilton Preparatory Academy and Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy. Adults who work near the Elizabeth Center or The Mills at Jersey Gardens, or who commute through Midtown or North Elizabeth station, can book a 1- or 2-hour lesson around a shift, weekends included. Just tell your Elizabeth driving instructor where the lesson should end.
