A crossroads township next door

Our office sits on Morris Avenue in Union, and that road — Route 82 — begins in Springfield, at a traffic-light complex with Route 124 and Mountain Avenue (CR 577) in the business district. The centre of Springfield is about 3.8 miles from us, roughly 10 minutes without traffic. The township is a crossroads: I-78, US 22, Route 24 and Route 124 all run through it, and the Route 24 freeway ends at an interchange with I-78 here. For a learner, quiet residential streets are never far from serious traffic, so our driving lessons in Springfield, NJ are sequenced carefully.

Where we practice in Springfield

  • US 22. Past the Mountain Avenue (CR 577) interchange, Route 22 has a 1.8-mile wide median lined with businesses and U-turn ramps, plus a level crossing with the abandoned Rahway Valley Railroad. Entering and leaving on the right, using the U-turn ramps to change direction and merging back into fast traffic are core skills here.
  • Route 124 (Morris Avenue). It passes under I-78 without an interchange and narrows to two lanes through downtown before widening to four again.
  • The downtown light complex. Where Route 82, Route 124 and CR 577 meet, plus Duffy's Corner bus lot at Morris Avenue and Caldwell Place.
  • I-78 and Route 24. For students ready for freeway speeds.

Along the way you'll drive by Baltusrol Golf Club, host of the 2016 PGA Championship, and the Cannon Ball House museum (c. 1741), linked to the 1780 Battle of Springfield.

The Route 22 office isn't a licensing center

Springfield has an office at 271 Route 22 East, but it is a REAL ID-only office (by appointment) and vehicle center, not a full licensing center or road test site. For permits and licenses, the nearest centers are Newark, 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue (about 18 minutes without traffic), and Elizabeth, 17 Caldwell Place (about 19 minutes). Don't confuse that Elizabeth address with Caldwell Place at Duffy's Corner here in Springfield. Newark is also the nearest road test site; Rahway, 1140 Woodbridge Road, is about 25 minutes.

After the license

A probationary license comes with limits for drivers under 21, and the curfew matters most for evening plans: no driving between 11:01 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. For Jonathan Dayton students heading to late practices or events, that is worth planning around. The other rules: no phone use of any kind, red decals on both plates, and a passenger limit of dependents plus one when no parent is in the car.

Home, Dayton or a nearby station

Jonathan Dayton High School students can be picked up by a Springfield driving instructor after classes, and adults at home or work anywhere in 07081. Springfield has no train station; the Millburn and Short Hills stations restrict commuter parking for non-residents, while Maplewood and Summit allow it, and we can meet commuters near the Summit or Maplewood stations. Families near Briant Park or Lenape Park are minutes from our office.

Next step

Route 22 is where in-car defensive driving lessons pay off; younger drivers start with the learner's permit at 16. If you're comparing a driving school in Springfield, the same service runs east into Union, where Route 82 continues to our office, and into neighbouring Summit.
