Learning to drive in a big city

Newark asks a lot of a new driver. Buses and the light rail share the road, long avenues fan out from downtown, and the Turnpike (I-95) and the airport's highway ramps run right through the city. Plenty of residents have simply never needed a car — about 40% of Newark households had none in 2020 — so adult beginners are as welcome in our car as 16-year-olds. If you want a driving school in Newark that moves at your pace, this is how we work: one student, one instructor, a dual-control car, and lessons of 1 or 2 hours, seven days a week.

Where we practice in Newark

Nobody starts on McCarter Highway. First lessons stay on quieter residential streets, where steering, braking and mirror checks can become habits. From there, your Newark driving instructor builds the route outward:

  • Broad Street and Market Street — downtown driving among buses, crosswalks and commuters heading for Newark Penn Station, Broad Street station and the Newark Light Rail, plus the busy blocks by Military Park, the Prudential Center and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.
  • South Orange, Springfield and Bloomfield Avenues — the long avenues that radiate from downtown, ideal for steady mid-speed driving, lane choice and left turns at signals.
  • Route 21 (McCarter Highway) — its stretch through southern Newark is known for a high accident rate because of the dense mix of businesses and traffic lights. We use it to practice scanning far ahead and keeping space around the car.
  • I-280, I-78 and the Turnpike — once you are ready. Exit 13 on I-280 is a left-side exit where the road drops from 10 lanes to four, and the Newark Airport Interchange is a huge web of ramps tying together I-78, US 1/9, US 22 and Route 21. Far better to meet them with an instructor beside you than alone.

Permit, licensing and road test: all in the city

Newark residents have a short trip on test day. The Newark licensing center and the Newark road test site share one address — 228 Frelinghuysen Ave (07114) — about 4 minutes from City Hall without traffic. Road tests there are by appointment only, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If no date suits you, the next-closest options are the Elizabeth licensing center at 17 Caldwell Place and the Rahway road test site at 1140 Woodbridge Rd and East Hazelwood Ave, roughly 20 minutes away.

The test itself is short, about 10–15 minutes, and includes parallel parking, a three-point (K) turn and backing in a straight line for about 100 feet. Only the examiner rides with you while your instructor waits, and you can rent our school car for the appointment. If you need another attempt, the wait to retest is 14 days.

Pickup across the city

We collect you from home, school or work and bring you back afterward, so no one has to cross the city by bus to get to a lesson. Teens can be picked up after classes at Science Park, Technology, Central, East Side, Weequahic, Barringer, West Side, Malcolm X Shabazz or Newark Vocational High School, among others. Adults can be met at a downtown workplace, at home in the Ironbound or near Branch Brook Park, or close to Newark Penn or Broad Street station so the lesson fits around a commute.

Where to start

Adult beginners can start with our adult driving lessons; if your appointment is already booked, road test preparation concentrates on the maneuvers the test includes. Nervous drivers are always welcome. Live just over the city line? We also teach in East Orange and Irvington.

Questions & answers

Driving lessons in Newark: FAQ

Where do Newark residents take the road test?

At the Newark road test site, 228 Frelinghuysen Ave — the same address as the Newark licensing center, about 4 minutes from City Hall without traffic. Tests are by appointment only, weekdays 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

I'm an adult who has never driven. Where would we start?

On quiet residential streets, not downtown. We move on to Broad Street, Route 21 and I-280 only when you feel ready. Nervous beginners are welcome — see our adult driving lessons.

Will you practice the highways around the airport with me?

Yes, once your basics are solid. The Newark Airport Interchange ties together I-78, US 1/9, US 22 and Route 21, and we work through merging and lane choice there in a dual-control car.

Can my teen be picked up from a Newark high school?

Yes. We pick up from Newark high schools, from home or from a parent's workplace, and drop off afterward. At 16, teens start with the 6-hour behind-the-wheel course for the special learner permit.
