A compact city with a lot of highway
East Orange is a small city with a big share of highway. The Parkway (GSP) and I-280 meet near East Orange station, I-280 runs through town below street level next to the Morristown Line, and the city has two Parkway interchanges of its own. For a new driver, that means decisions arrive quickly. Our job as a driving school in East Orange is to make those decisions familiar before you face them alone: private lessons in a dual-control car, 1 or 2 hours at a time, on any day of the week, weekends included.
Where we practice in East Orange
Residential side streets come first. Then we work toward the busier corridors in a sensible order:
- Main Street, Central Avenue (CR 508) and South Orange Avenue (CR 510) — everyday city driving with signals, turning traffic and pedestrians. Central Avenue also runs past East Orange General Hospital.
- Grove Street (CR 509) — a local through route that also connects to the big I-280/Parkway interchange, along with Oraton Parkway.
- I-280 through town — the depressed stretch beside the tracks, with ramps at Harrison Street and Clinton Street. Here we drill mirror checks, early signaling and fitting smoothly into moving traffic.
- The Parkway (GSP) — interchange 145 for I-280 and interchange 147 for Springdale Avenue. Near the I-280 junction the Parkway loses a lane in each direction, so planning your lane ahead of time matters.
The pace is yours. A nervous adult might spend several sessions on local streets; a teen with a test date might focus on parking and turns.
Licensing and road test logistics
Worth knowing before you go: the office at 183 South 18th Street in East Orange handles vehicle matters only. It is not a licensing center and it does not give road tests. For permits, licenses and road tests, East Orange drivers go to 228 Frelinghuysen Ave in Newark, which houses both a licensing center and a road test site, about 11 minutes away without traffic. For paperwork, the next choice is 17 Caldwell Place in Elizabeth, and if Newark has no suitable date, the Wayne road test site at 481 Route 46 West is roughly 17 minutes away.
Road tests are by appointment only, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect about 10–15 minutes behind the wheel with parallel parking and a three-point (K) turn on the list. Our school car can be rented for the occasion, and once you pull up, only the examiner gets in.
Pickup at school, home or the station
We pick up and drop off anywhere in the city. Students at East Orange Campus High School (on the former Upsala College campus), Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts and East Orange STEM Academy can be collected after classes once they are old enough for a permit. Commuters can meet us at East Orange station, across from City Hall, or at Brick Church station, and staff at the East Orange VA Medical Center or East Orange General Hospital can book a lesson at the end of a shift. We also offer a military discount.

Driving lessons in East Orange: FAQ
Can I take my road test at the East Orange office on South 18th Street?
No. That office handles vehicle matters only. The nearest licensing center and road test site is in Newark at 228 Frelinghuysen Ave, about 11 minutes away without traffic.
Do lessons include the Parkway and I-280 interchange?
Yes, when you are ready. We practice interchanges 145 and 147 and the I-280 ramps at Harrison and Clinton Streets, including the spot where the Parkway drops a lane in each direction.
Can you pick up my teen from East Orange Campus High School?
Yes — from East Orange Campus High School, Cicely Tyson School or East Orange STEM Academy, as well as from home. Teens can begin the 6-hour permit course at 16.
Is Wayne an option for the road test?
Yes. The Wayne road test site at 481 Route 46 West is roughly 17 minutes from East Orange without traffic, a useful backup if Newark has no appointment that fits.
