Sharing the road in a working city

Trucks are part of everyday traffic in Linden. In Linden, US 1/9 (Edgar Road) runs past industry, Linden Airport and the Phillips 66 Bayway Refinery, and the vehicles that serve them share the lanes with everyone else. For a new driver that changes the lesson plan: longer following distances, respect for big blind spots, and patience with vehicles that need room to stop and turn. Our driving lessons in Linden, NJ start on quieter residential streets and move up to the busy corridors at your pace, one instructor and one student in a dual-control car. From our Union office it is a drive of about 7.4 miles, some 16 minutes when the roads are clear.

Where we practice in Linden

  • US 1/9 (Edgar Road). Heavy truck traffic, plus a partial interchange with the western end of I-278 that offers only a northbound exit and a southbound entrance. It is a good lesson in reading ramp signs before you commit.
  • Route 27 (St. Georges Avenue). It forms the Roselle–Linden border at Wood Avenue, where about 23,081 vehicles use it daily, so lane changes and left turns take planning.
  • Wood Avenue (CR 617) and North Stiles Street (CR 615). The city's county roads, good for steady everyday driving.
  • Parkway interchange 136. The Parkway runs about 500 feet west of the city line, and exit 136 is the “four corners” where Clark, Winfield, Cranford and Linden meet — a natural place for a first Parkway merge.
  • Turnpike ramps to Exit 13 and I-278, for learners ready for highway speed.

Seven minutes to the test site

Linden is unusually well placed for test day. The Rahway licensing center and the Rahway road test site share one address — 1140 Woodbridge Road at East Hazelwood Avenue — about 3.1 miles and 7 minutes from Linden without traffic. The Elizabeth licensing center at 17 Caldwell Place is about 9 minutes away if that suits you better, and the next road test site is Newark, 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, about 14 minutes. Appointments run Monday through Friday. Because Rahway is so close, it is easy to fold test-skill practice into a regular lesson: parallel parking, the three-point (K) turn and backing in a straight line for about 100 feet.

Pickup around Linden

We pick up at home, at school or at work, including Linden High School after classes, and commuters who use Linden station — about a 39-minute ride to Manhattan on the Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast Line — can schedule a lesson around the train, weekends included. Whether you live by Memorial Park, between Wood Avenue and Lower Road, or out near the Hawk Rise Sanctuary on the Rahway River, the lesson starts at your door. Winfield Township shares Linden's 07036 ZIP code, and we serve it too.
