Learn to Drive in Roselle
Roselle is small, but its roads ask a lot: Route 27 on the Linden border, busy Wood Avenue and newly gated railroad crossings. We teach all of it one-on-one.

Quiet streets, busy edges
In January 1883 Roselle became home to the world's first electric lighting system using overhead wires, built by Edison, and its First Presbyterian Church at West 5th Avenue and Chestnut Street was the first church in the US lit by electricity. Today the borough is mostly residential side streets, a comfortable setting for a first lesson. The challenges sit at the edges: Route 27 along the Linden border, and a reactivated freight line that now crosses the borough with new gates. Getting to you is easy: Roselle is about 3.9 miles from our office, around a 12-minute drive on clear roads.
Where we practice in Roselle
- Route 27 (St. Georges Avenue). The borough's most significant highway and its southeastern border with Linden. At Wood Avenue about 23,081 vehicles use it every day.
- Wood Avenue (CR 617). Where it meets Route 27, timing a turn into steady traffic becomes a real skill.
- Chestnut Street. The downtown street, with storefronts, parked cars and people crossing.
- Railroad crossings. The freight line between Cranford and Linden, now run by Morristown & Erie, has been reactivated with new grade-crossing gates in Roselle. We teach when to stop, never to stop on the tracks, and to wait for the gates to rise fully before moving.
From special learner permit to road test
Teens in Roselle can begin at 16 with a special learner permit, which requires a licensed driving school and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training — that is our teen driver education course. After at least 6 months of supervised practice, a probationary license is available from 17. The nearest licensing center is in Elizabeth, 17 Caldwell Place, about 3.1 miles or 9 minutes away without traffic; the Rahway center at 1140 Woodbridge Road is the alternative at about 11 minutes. For the road test, the Rahway site at Woodbridge Road and East Hazelwood Avenue is about 11 minutes away, and Newark's site at 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue about 16.
Schools, stations and home pickup
We pick up students after classes at Abraham Clark High School and at Roselle Catholic High School, and adults from home or work. Roselle has had no station of its own since the one it shared with Roselle Park closed, so commuters on the Raritan Valley Line can arrange pickup near Roselle Park station instead. Families near Warinanco Park, the 205-acre county park Roselle shares with Elizabeth, are a short drive from our office.
Learning as an adult in Roselle
Not every learner is a teenager. If you never learned, learned long ago, or learned somewhere with very different traffic, a Roselle driving instructor can start you on quiet side streets and work toward Route 27 at your pace. Lessons are 1 or 2 hours, on weekdays or weekends; nervous drivers are welcome, and military families receive a discount.
Get started in Roselle
For 16-year-olds, teen driver education covers the 6 required hours. Drivers who want calmer, more defensive habits on Route 27 can book in-car defensive driving lessons. Friends in Roselle Park or Cranford can book with us the same way.
