Two very different kinds of driving

Scotch Plains gives a learner two very different roads to master. On the township's north side, the 1,945-acre Watchung Reservation has a hilly paved road that is popular with cyclists. Across the northern part of town, US 22 runs as a four- to five-lane arterial with an interchange at Martine Avenue (CR 655). In between are residential streets, Raritan Road and a short central stretch of Route 28. Driving lessons in Scotch Plains, NJ mean getting comfortable with hills and cyclists one day, and fast traffic with right-side ramps the next. The drive from our office is about 10.4 miles, around 19 minutes without traffic, and every lesson begins at your door.

Where we practice in Scotch Plains

  • US 22 and the Martine Avenue interchange. Merging, lane changes and exits in fast multi-lane traffic.
  • The Watchung Reservation road. Hill starts, speed control on descents and giving cyclists room.
  • Raritan Road. Past Ashbrook Golf Course.
  • Martine Avenue (CR 655). Linking the township to Fanwood and to Route 22.
  • Route 28. Its brief central stretch through the township.

Local history includes the Stage House Inn (built 1737) and the Osborn-Cannonball House Museum at 1840 Front Street. For highway practice beyond Route 22, I-78 is reached via Watchung or Berkeley Heights, and the Parkway via Clark.

Licensing centers and test day

The nearest licensing center is Rahway, 1140 Woodbridge Road at East Hazelwood Avenue, about 6.6 miles or 15 minutes without traffic; South Plainfield, 5000 Hadley Road, Suite 102, is the next option at about 18 minutes. The Rahway road test site, at the same address, is the closest; the Kilmer site at 33 Kilmer Road, Edison, is about 25 minutes. On test day expect parallel parking, a three-point (K) turn and roughly 100 feet of straight backing, all in about 10 to 15 minutes.

For Scotch Plains parents

Step one comes at 16, when your teen completes 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (our teen driver education course) to get the special learner permit. Then come at least 6 months of supervised practice and, for permits issued on or after February 1, 2025, 50 supervised hours with 10 after dark. The Reservation road and Route 22 are both worth including in those hours once your Scotch Plains driving instructor says your teen is ready.

Three high schools, one station next door

Students at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, Union Catholic Regional High School and the Union County Vocational-Technical Schools campus, home of the county's magnet schools, can all be picked up after class, including students from other towns who attend school here. The Raritan Valley Line runs through Scotch Plains, but the station is in Fanwood, and commuters are welcome to start their lesson there. Adults can be picked up at home or work.

Programs for Scotch Plains drivers

Hills and Route 22 both deserve extra respect in bad weather, which is what our winter driving lessons cover. Before test day, review the road test checklist. Want a driving school in Scotch Plains that also covers nearby towns? We teach in Fanwood and Westfield as well.
