A city that rewards careful reading

There is no federal highway inside Plainfield. US 22 is reached through North Plainfield, Dunellen or Fanwood, I-287 through South Plainfield or Piscataway, and I-78 through Watchung. So for the city's 54,586 residents (2020), most driving happens on city streets, and downtown those streets demand attention: Route 28 and Park Avenue split into one-way pairs, streets change direction at Park Avenue, and road names change within a few blocks. Plainfield also borders nine municipalities across three counties, so knowing your route matters. Plainfield is about 11.2 miles from our Union office, roughly 22 minutes with no traffic, and pickup works exactly as it does closer in.

Where we practice in Plainfield

  • The Fifth Street / Fourth Street pair. Route 28 runs eastbound on Fifth Street and westbound on Fourth Street, two lanes each. Park Avenue (CR 531) also splits onto Fifth and Fourth Streets near Plainfield station, and the streets change direction at Park Avenue.
  • Route 28 east of downtown. At Roosevelt Avenue it becomes a 25 mph two-way East Fifth Street, then is renamed South Avenue at Richmond Street — several name and direction changes in a short distance.
  • Front Street, South Avenue and 7th Street. Everyday city driving, with plenty of chances to practise lane choice and turns.

We take these one at a time, until reading one-way signs and lane markings becomes automatic.

Across the county line for licensing

Plainfield's nearest licensing center is just across the county line: South Plainfield, 5000 Hadley Road, Suite 102, about 6 miles and 12 minutes without traffic. The Edison licensing center at 45 Kilmer Road is next, about 18 minutes. For the road test, the Kilmer site at 33 Kilmer Road, Edison, is closest at about 9.1 miles and 18 minutes; Rahway, 1140 Woodbridge Road and East Hazelwood Avenue, is a close second at about 9.3 miles and 20 minutes. All road tests require an appointment and take place Monday to Friday, and our school car can be rented for test day.

Learning to drive as an adult

Plenty of people learn to drive later in life, and adult driving lessons in Plainfield, NJ are built for that: 1 or 2 hours at a time, any day including weekends, starting on a quiet street before the Fifth and Fourth Street pair downtown. Nervous drivers are welcome. If you will be driving a manual, ask about stick shift lessons; availability varies, so call first.

Pickup across all four ZIP codes

We pick up at Plainfield High School, the Plainfield Academy for the Arts and Advanced Studies and Pinnacle Academy High School, as well as at home or work in 07060, 07061, 07062 or 07063.
