A village with a campus and a mountain
Since April 2024, South Orange has officially been South Orange Village, and the name fits: a compact business district in a small valley, residential streets climbing the eastern slope of South Mountain on the west side, and Seton Hall University in the southeast. That mix suits two kinds of learner. There are Columbia High School teens working toward their first permit, and there are adults — university students, staff and residents — who never got around to learning. Driving lessons in South Orange, NJ with us are private, 1 or 2 hours long, and available 7 days a week, in a dual-control car.
Where we practice in South Orange
- The hillside streets — the western part of the village sits on South Mountain's slope, so this is where we teach hill starts and controlled descents.
- South Orange Avenue (CR 510) — past South Orange station and up the slope. At the top it enters South Mountain Reservation through the S Curves, a run of bends that rewards smooth steering and the right speed.
- Valley Street / Scotland Road and Wyoming Avenue (CR 577) — connectors with steady traffic, good for lane position and signaled turns.
- Irvington Avenue and Centre Street — everyday village driving: intersections, turns and parking practice.
- Around Seton Hall — near a busy campus we slow down and practice scanning crossings and yielding to pedestrians.
Licensing and test day
South Orange has no licensing center of its own. The closest is in Newark, at 228 Frelinghuysen Ave, which handles both licensing and road tests — about 14 minutes away without traffic. Elizabeth (17 Caldwell Place, about 19 minutes) handles licensing too, and Rahway's road test site, 1140 Woodbridge Rd (at East Hazelwood Ave), is about 30 minutes out. Of these, Newark and Rahway are the closest road test sites. Every road test is booked in advance for a weekday slot between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
On the day, expect parallel parking, a three-point (K) turn and roughly 100 feet of straight backing during a test of about 10–15 minutes. Rather than borrow a car, you can rent the school car you learned in.
Pickup on campus, at home or at the station
Choosing a driving school in South Orange often comes down to logistics, so we keep them simple. Seton Hall students can be picked up on or near campus; Columbia High School students after school (the building is in neighboring Maplewood); commuters at South Orange station on South Orange Avenue or at Mountain Station in Montrose. If you live near the South Orange Community Pool or anywhere else in the village, we come to your door and drop you back afterward.

Adults learning later in life can start with adult driving lessons; teens begin with the teen driver education course. Nearby, we also teach in Maplewood and West Orange.
