Millburn & Short Hills driving lessons, downtown to Route 24
Short Hills is part of Millburn Township, and together they bring one-way downtown streets, a busy mall interchange and Millburn High School. We teach it all one on one, with pickup at home, school or work.

One township, two names
Short Hills is not a separate town. It is a section of Millburn Township — an unincorporated community with its own ZIP code, 07078, and most of the township's residents. Millburn also borders Union, which puts our Morris Avenue office about 13 minutes away without traffic. Whether home is Millburn or Short Hills, the plan is the same: a private instructor and a dual-control car, with 1- or 2-hour lessons slotted around a busy family week, weekends included. A Millburn driving instructor from our team picks you up and drops you back, so a parent does not have to drive anyone to class.
Where we practice in Millburn & Short Hills
The tricky parts here are short but demanding:
- Downtown one-way streets — in the center of Millburn, CR 527 splits into a pair of one-way streets that run together with CR 577, which then becomes four-lane, undivided Millburn Avenue. Reading the signs, choosing a lane early and watching for drivers who don't are lessons in themselves.
- The Route 24 interchange — on the Millburn–Summit border, Route 24, Route 124 and JFK Parkway (CR 649) meet at the interchange that serves The Mall at Short Hills, with frontage-road movements that take some planning.
- Route 24 and I-78 — the Route 24 freeway runs along the Summit border and I-78 touches the township's southern tip near exit 49: two close options for highway merging.
- Residential Short Hills — quieter streets for early lessons, parallel parking and three-point turns.
Permits, licensing and road tests from Millburn
Don't be misled by the office just over the line at 271 Route 22 East in Springfield: it handles REAL ID (by appointment) and vehicle matters only, not full licensing or road tests. For the real thing, Millburn and Short Hills residents drive to Newark, where 228 Frelinghuysen Ave houses both licensing and road tests — about 19 minutes away without traffic. The licensing center in Elizabeth (17 Caldwell Place) is about 24 minutes; Rahway's road test site, 1140 Woodbridge Rd at East Hazelwood Ave, about 32. Many of the students we teach book Newark or Rahway. Tests always fall on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and our school car can be rented for the day.
After the test, under-21 drivers follow probationary rules: no driving from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., no hand-held or hands-free phones, and passengers limited to dependents plus one unless a parent is in the car.
Pickup in Millburn and Short Hills
We pick up Millburn High School students after classes and take them home afterward — or start from home, a parent's office, or a job at The Mall at Short Hills. Commuters can meet us at Millburn station (Essex Street and Lackawanna Place) or at Short Hills station, home of the local historical society museum. Families living near the Paper Mill Playhouse, Cora Hartshorn Arboretum or Greenwood Gardens get the same door-to-door service.

Driving lessons in Millburn & Short Hills: FAQ
Do you teach in Short Hills as well as Millburn?
Yes. Short Hills is a section of Millburn Township (ZIP 07078), and we pick up anywhere in both, including Millburn High School and Short Hills station.
Can I take my road test at the Springfield office on Route 22?
No. The office at 271 Route 22 East handles REAL ID by appointment and vehicle matters only. The nearest licensing center and road test site is in Newark at 228 Frelinghuysen Ave.
Why practice the downtown one-way streets?
In downtown Millburn, CR 527 and CR 577 run together on one-way pairs before becoming four-lane Millburn Avenue, so early lane choice matters — a skill that carries over to every busy downtown.
Do you practice the Route 24 interchange by the mall?
Yes, once you are ready. The Route 24, Route 124 and JFK Parkway interchange by The Mall at Short Hills has frontage-road movements worth rehearsing with an instructor.
