Why a license matters here

Livingston has no rail station. The closest link to the trains is a fee-based shuttle from Livingston Mall to South Orange station, so for most errands, jobs and after-school plans, somebody has to drive. That puts real weight on the day a teenager earns a license, and on the hours behind the wheel before it. We have taught drivers across this part of New Jersey since 2005, and driving lessons in Livingston, NJ follow a simple pattern: a private instructor, a dual-control car, and 1- or 2-hour sessions that fit around school, sports and work.

Where we practice in Livingston

Your Livingston driving instructor will build up to the town's trickiest spots one at a time:

  • Livingston Circle — the realigned traffic circle where Route 10 meets West Northfield Road (CR 508) and Eisenhower Parkway (CR 609). Yielding on entry, choosing your exit and signaling out of a circle are skills worth rehearsing before you face them alone.
  • Route 10 — beyond the circle, for lane changes and keeping pace with steady traffic.
  • South Orange Avenue (CR 510) — near Livingston Mall and Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center it switches between divided and undivided sections, so lane position and left turns need care.
  • Livingston Avenue (CR 527) and West Northfield Road — through-town roads for signals and mid-speed driving.
  • Eisenhower Parkway and I-280 — when you are ready for faster roads and highway on-ramps.

Licensing center and road test: Wayne is closest

Unlike towns closer to Newark, Livingston's nearest licensing center and road test site is in Wayne, in Passaic County, at 481 Route 46 West — about 21 minutes away without traffic. The Newark site at 228 Frelinghuysen Ave is only a few minutes farther, about 24 minutes, and Rahway is another option. Choose the site with an appointment that suits you; road tests are by appointment only, weekdays 8 a.m.–5 p.m.

On test day your instructor waits while the examiner rides with you for about 10–15 minutes, and our school car is available to rent for the test. If a retest is needed, there is a 14-day wait, so booking early takes the pressure off.

Pickup around Livingston

We pick up at Livingston High School, Newark Academy and Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School, at home anywhere from the Riker Hill area to the Old Force Homestead on South Livingston Avenue or the streets around Livingston Mall, or at work — including shifts at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. Lessons run 7 days a week, so a weekend session is easy to fit around a packed weekday schedule.

Questions & answers

Driving lessons in Livingston: FAQ

Where is the nearest road test site to Livingston?

Wayne, in Passaic County, at 481 Route 46 West — about 21 minutes away without traffic. Newark (228 Frelinghuysen Ave) is about 24 minutes away, and Rahway is another option.

How do you handle Livingston Circle with new drivers?

Only after the basics are solid. We practice yielding and lane choice on quieter roads first, then drive the circle where Route 10 meets West Northfield Road and Eisenhower Parkway until it feels routine.

Can you pick up from Newark Academy or Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School?

Yes — along with Livingston High School, home or a workplace. We drop off afterward, too.

What rules apply once my teen has a probationary license?

Drivers under 21 may not drive from 11:01 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. or use hand-held or hands-free phones, may carry only dependents plus one passenger unless a parent is in the car, and must display red decals on both plates.
