Lessons at the north end of our area
Montclair is about 24 minutes from our Union office without traffic — near the outer edge of the area we serve — and we still bring the car to you. It is a rewarding place to learn: a busy downtown, a second business district in Upper Montclair, and a western border that follows the ridge of the First Watchung Mountain up toward Eagle Rock. Lessons here suit everyone from Montclair High School teens to MSU students and commuters who have relied on the train for years. If you are weighing up a driving school in Montclair, the format is simple: private lessons, a dual-control car, and sessions of 1 or 2 hours on whichever day suits you, Saturday and Sunday included.
Where we practice in Montclair
- Bloomfield Avenue (CR 506) — heading into town it narrows from a four-lane divided road to an undivided one and curves into busy downtown Montclair. Lane changes need to happen early, before the road narrows.
- Montclair Center — where Bloomfield Avenue meets South Fullerton Avenue, Glenridge Avenue and Church Street. This is where we work on parallel parking, pedestrians and slow, careful turns.
- The west side — streets climb the ridge of the First Watchung Mountain, so hill starts and gentle downhill braking belong in every Montclair learner's toolkit.
- Valley Road and Watchung Avenue — key local routes. Watchung Avenue (CR 655) leads to the Parkway (GSP) interchange just over the line in Bloomfield, a convenient first step onto the Parkway.
Licensing center and road test: Wayne first
Montclair's closest licensing center and road test site is not in Essex County at all: it is the Wayne site at 481 Route 46 West, over the line in Passaic County, about 12 minutes from town without traffic. Paterson's licensing center (125 Broadway, Suite 201) is a close second for permits and paperwork, and the Lodi road test site at 8 Mill St, off Garibaldi Ave, is about 19 minutes away. You can also book Newark or Rahway for the test itself, and you are welcome to rent our car for test day.
Slots run on weekdays from 8 in the morning until 5 in the afternoon, by appointment. The test takes about 10–15 minutes, includes the three-point (K) turn and parallel parking, and you will be alone in the car with the examiner.
Pickup in Montclair
Driving lessons in Montclair, NJ start wherever your day does. Montclair High School students can be picked up after classes, MSU students near campus, and commuters at any of the six Montclair-Boonton Line stations: Bay Street, Walnut Street, Watchung Avenue, Upper Montclair, Mountain Avenue or Montclair Heights. Only Bay Street has weekend train service, so on Saturdays and Sundays a pickup at home is usually simpler — whether you live near the Montclair Art Museum, the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens or Lackawanna Plaza, the old Lackawanna station.
