The teen route to a New Jersey license, step by step

New Jersey has a graduated system for new drivers, and for most teenagers it starts with us. At 16 you cannot simply walk in and buy a permit: a special learner permit goes together with six hours of behind-the-wheel training from a licensed driving school. Here is the whole road, so you and your parents know what comes when.

  1. Enroll and do the paperwork (age 16). You fill in the special learner permit form with a parent or guardian’s consent and gather your original ID documents. We go through the list with you on the phone so nothing is missing.
  2. Knowledge and vision tests. You need 80% on a 50-question knowledge test and must meet the vision standard. Our free practice test is a good way to prepare.
  3. Six hours behind the wheel with us. The training is done in our dual-control car. Only after all six hours are completed is your permit ready to be validated for practice driving with a parent.
  4. At least six months of supervised practice. For permits issued on or after February 1, 2025, drivers under 21 also need 50 hours of supervised practice, including 10 hours after dark, certified on a form signed by a parent or guardian.
  5. Road test and probationary license (17 or older). After the road test you drive on a probationary license for a year, then move to a basic license at 18 or later.
Rules for drivers under 21 with a permit or probationary license: no driving between 11:01 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., no hand-held or hands-free phones, passengers limited to dependents plus one other person unless a parent is in the car, everyone buckled up, and red decals on the front and rear license plates.

What our six-hour course covers

The six hours are split into lessons on different days — no more than three hours of behind-the-wheel training may be given in one day, and short, regular sessions work better anyway.

Lesson 1 — the car and quiet streets

Seat, mirrors and seat belt; steering, smooth starts and stops; signaling and checking blind spots. We stay on calm residential streets until the basics feel natural.

Lesson 2 — intersections and right of way

Stop signs and traffic lights, right turns, left turns across traffic, pedestrians in crosswalks, school zones and the speed limits that apply when nothing is posted.

Lesson 3 — traffic, parking and the plan ahead

Busier roads and lane changes, New Jersey jughandles, parallel parking, the three-point turn and backing up in a straight line. We finish with honest feedback and a practice plan for the months with mom or dad.

After the six hours: practice that counts

Fifty supervised hours is a lot of driving, and how they are spent matters. A good plan: start in empty parking lots, move to quiet streets, then evening driving, rain, highways and parking. You can add lessons with us at any point, and finish with a road test preparation lesson before the test — where the student can also use our school car.

Questions & answers

Teen Driver Education: FAQ

Can my 16-year-old get a permit without a driving school?

Not at 16. The special learner permit is tied to a behind-the-wheel course with a licensed driving school. From 17, a teen can get an examination permit without a school, but most families still book lessons.

How long does the six-hour course take?

Behind-the-wheel training is limited to three hours a day, so the six hours take at least two days. We schedule the lessons around school and family plans.

What are the 50 supervised hours?

For permits issued on or after February 1, 2025, drivers under 21 must log at least 50 hours of supervised practice — 10 of them after dark — before getting a probationary license. A parent or guardian signs a certification form. This is in addition to the six-month minimum practice period.

When can my teen take the road test?

After at least six months of supervised practice on the permit, and not before turning 17. Our road test help includes a warm-up lesson and our car for test day.

Can you pick my teen up from school?

Yes. We pick students up at home or at school and drop them back wherever you prefer, anywhere in our service area.

What do we need to bring to the first lesson?

We will tell you exactly when we book. For the special learner permit you need the signed permit form and original ID documents; we explain every item on the phone.
