Driving lessons for adults — whatever your starting point
A lot of our students are adults: people who never needed a car until a new job or a move, parents who want to drive their kids, drivers who learned in another country, and people who passed a test years ago but lost their confidence. Every lesson is private, so you can ask anything and go at your own pace.
Who our adult lessons are for
- Complete beginners — we start in quiet streets and build up step by step
- Drivers with a license from another country — learn local rules, signs, jughandles and road test expectations
- Returning drivers — refresh your skills after years away from the wheel
- Nervous drivers — calm, judgement-free practice on the routes you need
- Road test candidates — focused preparation and our car for test day
Permits and practice time for adults
From age 17 you can get an examination permit after passing the knowledge and vision tests — no driving school is required to get it, though lessons make the practice time far more productive.
- Ages 17–20: at least six months of supervised practice, and — for permits issued on or after February 1, 2025 — 50 practice hours including 10 after dark, with the same curfew, passenger, phone and decal rules as teens.
- Age 21 and over: at least three months of practice with a supervising driver before the road test. The curfew, passenger and decal restrictions do not apply, and the 50-hour requirement does not apply to permits issued at 21 or older.
Your supervising driver for practice outside our lessons must be at least 21, sit in the front seat and have held a New Jersey license for at least three years.
What we practice
We plan lessons around the driving you will actually do. A typical course moves from car control and residential streets to busy avenues and intersections, highway merging on roads like Route 22 and I-78, New Jersey jughandles, parallel parking in town, and evening driving. Lessons last 1 or 2 hours and we teach seven days a week, so lessons fit around work and family.
Licensed abroad?
If you hold a foreign license, you will usually need to pass the knowledge and vision tests, and you may need a road test. Driving habits that were fine at home can cost points on a New Jersey test — right on red, four-way stops, school buses and pedestrians in crosswalks catch many experienced drivers out. A couple of lessons focused on local rules make a real difference.

Questions & answers
Adult Driving Lessons: FAQ
Do I need a permit before my first lesson?
Yes — you need a valid permit to drive on public roads, including during lessons. If you do not have one yet, call us and we will explain how to get your examination permit.
I am 35 and have never driven. Is that unusual?
Not at all. Many of our students start as adults. We begin in quiet streets and only move on when you are comfortable.
Can lessons start from my workplace?
Yes. We pick you up at home, work or anywhere convenient in our service area, and drop you back afterwards.
How many lessons do adults usually need?
It varies widely. Complete beginners usually need a series of lessons spread over several weeks; experienced drivers preparing for a test may need only a few. After your first lesson we suggest an honest plan.
Do you teach in the evening or on weekends?
Yes — lessons run seven days a week, including evenings and weekends.
