Winter driving lessons for New Jersey roads

A first winter behind the wheel is a big step. Snow, sleet, freezing rain and black ice change everything about braking, steering and visibility — and New Jersey winters bring all of them. Our winter driving lessons let new drivers experience those conditions with an instructor and a dual-control car, instead of alone on the first icy morning.

What we cover

• Before you drive: clearing snow and ice from the whole car — roof, hood, windows and lights. New Jersey law requires it, with fines from $25 to $75, and far more if flying ice causes injury or damage.
• Space and speed: at least six seconds of following distance on snow-covered roads, and gentle, early braking
• Braking with ABS — firm, steady pressure and steering around the problem
• Skids: easing off the gas and looking and steering where you want to go
• Hills, bridges and shade: where black ice forms first
• Visibility: headlights on whenever the wipers are on, defrost and keeping the windshield clear
• Snowplows and stuck cars: giving plows room and what to do if you get stuck
• Winter kit: what to keep in the car from December to March

Safety first

We teach winter skills when conditions allow it safely; in severe weather we will call you to reschedule. Winter lessons work best for students who already have the basics; complete beginners start with our regular adult or teen lessons.
