How the NJ knowledge test works
Before you can drive on a permit, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission tests your knowledge of the rules of the road. The real test has 50 multiple-choice questions, and you need 80% — 40 correct answers — to pass. You also take a vision test.
- The written test is offered in English and several other languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Polish, Russian, Hindi and more; an oral test is available in English and Spanish.
- Most new drivers book the test online after buying their permit. Teens getting a special learner permit at 16 do it together with their driving school.
- If you fail, you can retake the test after seven days.

- Read the manual chapter by chapter, then test yourself. Signs, right of way and the rules for new drivers come up again and again.
- Learn the numbers: 25 feet from a crosswalk, 50 feet from a stop sign, 10 feet from a fire hydrant, 15 feet from railroad tracks, 25 feet from a stopped school bus.
- Know the teen rules if you are under 21: the 11:01 p.m.–5:00 a.m. curfew, the passenger limit, no phones of any kind and the red decals.
