A small borough with one main road

Only two towns border Garwood: Cranford and Westfield. The borough is small — 4,454 residents at the 2020 census — and its main highway is Route 28 (North Avenue), which runs through Garwood's commercial areas as a two-lane street. For a beginner that simplicity helps: you can focus on steering, speed and smooth stops before taking on the busier downtowns next door. Garwood was once home to the Aeolian Company, at one time the world's largest maker of musical instruments; today it is a quiet place to start. From our office, Garwood is roughly 5.2 miles and 12 traffic-free minutes away.

Where we practice in Garwood

  • Route 28 (North Avenue). Two lanes through the business strip, with parking, driveways and steady traffic.
  • Route 59 (Lincoln Avenue). Route 28 meets it on the Cranford border. Route 59 is only about 792 feet long, a one-block underpass beneath the Raritan Valley Line, and the Garwood–Cranford border runs right down the middle of the road.
  • Beyond the borough. Once the basics are steady, lessons extend into downtown Cranford and Westfield and, from there, the Parkway.

A typical progression from Garwood

  1. Residential streets inside the borough: starting, stopping, turning and parking.
  2. Route 28 through Garwood's business strip, with parked cars and driveways on both sides.
  3. Route 28 east through downtown Cranford, where it crosses Springfield and Centennial Avenues.
  4. The Parkway at interchange 137, where Route 28 widens to a four-lane divided highway.

Each step waits until the previous one feels comfortable.

Where Garwood drivers test

For permits and licensing, Garwood residents are closest to Elizabeth's center at 17 Caldwell Place, roughly a 15-minute, 6.2-mile drive without traffic, with Rahway's center at 1140 Woodbridge Road about two minutes farther. The Rahway road test site at Woodbridge Road and East Hazelwood Avenue is the closest place to take the test, with Newark, 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, about 18 minutes away. The test includes parallel parking and the three-point (K) turn, and both get proper practice time before your appointment.

Pickup for Garwood students and commuters

Garwood students attend Arthur L. Johnson High School in Clark, and a Garwood driving instructor can pick them up there after class. We also pick up at home or work anywhere in 07027. If you commute by rail, Garwood station has limited Raritan Valley Line service and no platforms; whether you use it or the stations in Cranford or Westfield, we can schedule around your train. Book 1 or 2 hours at a time on any day of the week; military families receive a discount.
