A borough that keeps Route 22 at arm's length
Unlike most Route 22 towns, Mountainside allows little commercial development next to the highway, so you'll see fewer business entrances along Route 22 here than in neighbouring towns. The borough is small — 7,020 people at the 2020 census — with the Watchung Reservation on its north side and I-78 close by. That gives a learner a useful mix of residential streets, a hilly park road and two major highways, all of which a driving school in Mountainside should cover. Mountainside is about 5.1 miles from our office, 12 minutes or so without traffic, and every lesson is one-on-one in a dual-control car.
Where we practice in Mountainside
- US 22 eastbound and its bus shoulder. A one-mile stretch of the eastbound shoulder is a bus bypass shoulder, designated an exclusive bus lane from 6:00 to 7:30 a.m. Drivers must stay out of it during those hours, the kind of local rule we point out on the road.
- The Watchung Reservation. Its hilly paved road on the borough's north side builds hill-start and braking control.
- Coles Avenue. Home of the Trailside Nature & Science Center, built in 1941.
- I-78. For freeway merging once the basics are solid.
Other local reference points include Watchung Stables, on the site of a former Nike missile battery, and the Echo Lake Park path, which starts at Mountainside Police Headquarters.
Licensing and the road test: distance versus time
By distance, the nearest licensing center and road test site are in Rahway, at 1140 Woodbridge Road and East Hazelwood Avenue — about 8.7 miles, though around 25 minutes without traffic. Newark (228 Frelinghuysen Avenue) is about 11 miles off, yet I-78 usually makes it the quicker trip, around 20 minutes, and it offers both licensing and road tests. A third choice for licensing is Elizabeth (17 Caldwell Place), about 21 minutes. Don't be misled by the office at 271 Route 22 East in Springfield: it deals with REAL ID appointments and vehicles, not permits or road tests.
New drivers and returning drivers
Driving lessons in Mountainside, NJ aren't only for teens. Adults who have not driven in years, and older drivers who want a check-up on Route 22 merges or the Reservation's hills, get the same one-on-one approach: 1 or 2 hours at a time, any day of the week, at a pace that suits them. Nervous drivers are welcome, and every completed course earns a certificate of achievement.
Pickup without a local station
Home pickup covers all of 07092, and we can also collect a teen from school or an adult from work. The borough has no train station; Summit station is about 2 miles from the centre and Westfield's about 4, and commuters can arrange to meet a Mountainside driving instructor near either.
Programs worth a look
Hills and Route 22 make winter driving lessons worth considering, and older drivers who want to refresh their skills can book a senior refresher. Springfield and Westfield, which both border the borough, are part of our area too.
