Where three counties meet
Union, Morris and Somerset counties meet at Berkeley Heights, which borders Long Hill Township, Warren and Watchung. Apart from I-78, the township's main roads — Springfield, Mountain, Snyder, Plainfield and Park Avenues — are heavily residential, with a single travel lane in each direction. That suits learners who want to build skills gradually, and it rewards patience, since there is rarely room to hurry. If you are looking for a driving school in Berkeley Heights, we are about 10.5 miles away, roughly 18 minutes without traffic, and we teach one-on-one in a dual-control car.
Where we practice in Berkeley Heights
- Springfield Avenue (CR 512) downtown. Between Plainfield Avenue and Snyder Avenue, past the municipal building and the train station.
- Mountain, Snyder, Plainfield and Park Avenues. One lane each way past homes and, on Plainfield Avenue, Columbia Park: ideal for speed control and following distance.
- Wet-weather judgment. Parts of the township, including some of the downtown Springfield Avenue area, are in flood zones. We teach how to read conditions after heavy rain and to choose another route rather than drive into standing water.
- The Watchung Reservation. Home to Lake Surprise and the deserted village of Feltville, with a hilly paved road through it.
- I-78. The township's only freeway, for merging and lane changes at speed.
How lessons usually progress
Driving lessons in Berkeley Heights, NJ tend to follow the roads themselves: first the residential avenues, then downtown Springfield Avenue with its station traffic, then the Reservation's hills, and finally I-78. Moving on happens when you're ready, not on a fixed schedule, and adults returning to driving can start at whatever step fits.
Closest by distance, quickest by time
Rahway's center at 1140 Woodbridge Road (East Hazelwood Avenue) is the nearest licensing office on the map, 11.7 miles away, though the drive takes about 27 minutes even without traffic. South Plainfield, 5000 Hadley Road, Suite 102, is about 25 minutes. Rahway is also the nearest road test site by distance, but Newark's site at 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, about 14.5 miles away, takes only about 20 minutes. Book the test for a weekday, since appointments are required and there is no weekend testing. Only the examiner rides with you, and if you need to retest there is a 14-day wait.
Pickup around the township
Governor Livingston High School is our after-class pickup point for teens; adults can start from home or work anywhere in 07922, or from Berkeley Heights station on the Gladstone Branch. Seven-day scheduling, in 1- or 2-hour blocks, makes it easier to fit lessons with a Berkeley Heights driving instructor around school, sports and the commute.
