A small borough with a big road through it

With 8,427 residents at the 2020 census, Kenilworth is mostly quiet residential streets — yet the Parkway cuts diagonally through the borough, past many of its businesses, and US 22 briefly forms its northern border. A learner here can go from calm blocks to serious traffic in a few turns, which is why our driving lessons in Kenilworth, NJ build up in stages. Kenilworth is practically next door, about 2.4 miles or 7 minutes with no traffic from our office.

Where we practice in Kenilworth

  • The Boulevard (CR 509). The borough's main road and its route to the Parkway.
  • Parkway interchange 138 at Galloping Hill Road and the Boulevard. It is Kenilworth's main highway access and a natural first Parkway entry.
  • Michigan Avenue (CR 617). A county road running toward Roselle Park.
  • US 22 on the northern edge. Here the highway's wide, business-lined median narrows back to a Jersey barrier, a spot where lane position matters.

Local landmarks make handy waypoints when you are learning to plan a route: Galloping Hill Golf Course, Black Brook Park and Lenape Park (joined by a 4.5-mile paved path to Echo Lake Park and Mountainside), and the library, home of the “Bard on the Boulevard” Shakespeare series.

Which office to use

The nearest full licensing center is Elizabeth, 17 Caldwell Place, about 5.1 miles and 13 minutes without traffic. The nearest road test site is Newark, 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, about 12 minutes away; Rahway, 1140 Woodbridge Road, is about 16. You may notice an office closer to home at 271 Route 22 East in Springfield, but it is a REAL ID-only office (by appointment) and vehicle center, not a full licensing center or road test site.

What Kenilworth teens need to know

At 16 a teen can get a special learner permit through a licensed driving school by completing 6 hours behind the wheel, and our teen driver education course covers those hours. After 6 months of supervised practice comes the probationary license, available from 17. Until 21, new drivers may not drive between 11:01 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. and may not use a phone at the wheel, hand-held or hands-free.

Brearley, home or work

We pick up at David Brearley High School, which also serves Winfield Township students, and at homes and workplaces across the 07033 ZIP code. There is no rail station in Kenilworth; commuters can meet us near Roselle Park station on the Raritan Valley Line, under a mile from the border.
