A borough of county roads

Drivers in New Providence spend nearly all their time on county roads. There is no highway in the borough apart from county routes: Springfield Avenue (CR 512) is the most prominent road, and CR 647 and CR 649 are the other county routes. For a beginner that is a comfortable setting, and it also means highway practice has to be planned on purpose rather than picked up by accident. Home to 13,650 people at the 2020 census, the borough meets Chatham Township across the Passaic River, and Murray Hill, an area split between New Providence and Berkeley Heights, is home to Nokia Bell Labs. Of the Union County towns we serve, New Providence is among the farthest from our office — about 11.6 miles, roughly 20 minutes without traffic — but pickup is included all the same.

Where we practice in New Providence

  • Springfield Avenue (CR 512). Through the commercial centre and over the Gladstone Branch near New Providence station into Summit.
  • Rush-hour buses. Lakeland commuter buses stop along Springfield Avenue at rush hour, so learners practise waiting behind stopped buses and watching for passengers on foot.
  • The Village Shopping Center. Most of downtown, with parking-lot driving, slow turns and pedestrians.
  • CR 647 and CR 649. Steady county-road practice.
  • Highway time outside the borough. I-78 and Route 24 through Summit and Springfield, once you're ready.

Licensing and the road test: plan for the drive

Measured in miles, Rahway is your closest option for both licensing and the road test: 1140 Woodbridge Road at East Hazelwood Avenue, 12.6 miles and about 29 minutes without traffic. Another licensing option, South Plainfield (5000 Hadley Road, Suite 102), takes about the same time, around 28 minutes. Newark is the other contender: farther at 14.5 miles, yet usually quicker via I-78 at about 21 minutes, with both a licensing center and a road test site at 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue. Because tests are weekday-only and by appointment, plan the trip around school or work; our school car can be rented for the day so you don't have to arrange a vehicle.

Why highway practice matters here

Whichever test site you choose, reaching it means driving beyond the borough's county roads, and after licensing most trips out of town do too. That is why a New Providence driving instructor will add I-78 merges and lane changes once Springfield Avenue feels easy. Once you're there, the test is brief, about 10 to 15 minutes, and includes parallel parking, a K-turn and a straight reverse of about 100 feet.

Two stations, one high school

We pick up New Providence High School students after classes, adults at home or work in 07974, and commuters near New Providence or Murray Hill stations on the Gladstone Branch. Families anywhere in the borough, from around the Village Shopping Center to the Salt Box Museum at 1350 Springfield Avenue, are in our pickup area. Book 1- or 2-hour sessions on whichever days suit you.
