A borough that revolves around its station

Much of Roselle Park's daily traffic orbits one spot: Roselle Park station on the Raritan Valley Line, at the corner of Chestnut Street and West Lincoln Avenue. Since the Aldene Connection opened here in 1967, Raritan Valley trains have been able to run through to Newark Penn Station, and the streets around the station get busy with commuters at peak times. That makes the borough a useful classroom for drop-off traffic and pedestrians. A driving school in Roselle Park doesn't have to come far, and we don't: our Union office is about 2.6 miles away, roughly 8 minutes without traffic.

Where we practice in Roselle Park

  • Westfield Avenue (Route 28). Coming from Cranford, Route 28 widens to a four-lane divided highway at the Parkway interchange, then becomes West Westfield Avenue as it enters Roselle Park and crosses over the Raritan Valley Line and a Conrail line. Lane discipline matters as the road changes character.
  • Parkway interchange 137. Just beyond the western boundary, it puts a first highway merge only minutes from home.
  • Chestnut Street and the station area. Pick-ups, drop-offs and people walking to the trains.
  • Michigan Avenue (CR 617). A steady county road toward Kenilworth for speed control and lane position.

Westfield Avenue also carries a piece of history: it is the site of Stone's Store, the first store lit by Edison's electric light.

Two test sites, almost the same distance

Rahway, at 1140 Woodbridge Road and East Hazelwood Avenue, is about 6.2 miles and 14 minutes away; Newark, at 228 Frelinghuysen Avenue, is a little farther at 7.1 miles but takes about 13 minutes. Choose whichever offers an appointment that suits you.

The teen timeline

For Roselle Park High School students, the path starts at 16 with a special learner permit and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training, followed by at least 6 months of supervised practice. For permits issued on or after February 1, 2025, drivers under 21 also log 50 supervised hours, 10 of them after dark. A probationary license follows from 17, with red decals on both plates until 21.
