A compact borough with a short route to the highway
Scotch Plains wraps around Fanwood on every side except the southwest, where Plainfield begins. Inside that boundary live 7,774 people (2020 census), mostly on quiet residential streets. Two roads do the heavy lifting: Route 28 (South Avenue), which carries the business district, and Martine Avenue (CR 655), the main route north to US 22. Fanwood won a 2014 NJ Future Smart Growth Award for its downtown plan, and that compact downtown is where you'll practise the slower, close-quarters skills. Fanwood sits about 9.4 miles from our Union office, approximately 19 minutes when traffic is flowing freely.
Where we practice in Fanwood
- Route 28 (South Avenue). It enters Fanwood at Terrill Road (CR 611) and crosses Martine Avenue in a business strip before turning residential, so parking, turning cars and pedestrians all come up.
- Martine Avenue (CR 655). North to the US 22 interchange in Scotch Plains, where learners practise right-side ramps and fast multi-lane traffic.
- The station area. Around Fanwood's historic Victorian station building on the north side, and through the Fanwood Park Historic District along North Avenue and North Martine Avenue.
Rahway, South Plainfield or Edison
For permits and licenses, Fanwood's closest option is the Rahway center at 1140 Woodbridge Road (East Hazelwood Avenue), some 17 minutes and 7.5 miles away when traffic is light. The South Plainfield licensing center at 5000 Hadley Road, Suite 102, is a close alternative at about 18 minutes. Rahway is also the nearest road test site; the Kilmer road test site at 33 Kilmer Road in Edison is next, about 24 minutes away. Appointments are required, and tests run on weekdays only. Expect parallel parking and a three-point (K) turn; your instructor waits while the examiner rides with you.
Adults who have relied on the train
With a train station in town, it is possible to get by in Fanwood for years without driving. If you now need a license, adult driving lessons in Fanwood, NJ start wherever you are: quiet side streets first, then South Avenue, then Martine Avenue up to Route 22. Nervous drivers are welcome, lessons last 1 or 2 hours, and military families receive a discount.
